Driveway surfaces and styles
Choosing a surface is a balance between looks, upkeep, drainage and cost. These are the options most customers ask about.
Block paving
Durable and repairable, with a wide choice of colours and laying patterns. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid if a section ever settles.
Block paving styles
Traditional, tumbled and contemporary blocks, in colours such as charcoal, brindle, grey, buff and red, laid in patterns including herringbone, stretcher bond and basket weave.
Resin bound
Aggregate mixed with resin and trowelled smooth. It gives a clean, seamless finish and, when laid on a suitable base, can be permeable.
Resin bonded
Resin spread on the base and stone scattered on top, giving a rougher, textured surface.
Cobbles and setts
Natural stone or setts for a traditional look, often used as borders or on character properties.
Permeable paving
Block paving built to let rainwater drain through, useful where drainage is a concern or planning rules apply.

Read the guideDriveways: common questions
Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?
Often not for a front garden, as long as the new surface is permeable or rainwater drains to a lawn or border within your property. Paving more than 5 square metres with a surface that is not permeable normally needs planning permission. A dropped kerb is a separate permission from the highway authority, and listed buildings and conservation areas have extra rules, so it is worth checking with your council. We can advise on the practical side when we quote.
Block paving or resin: which is better?
Neither is better for everyone. Block paving is hard-wearing and easy to repair in sections. Resin bound gives a smooth, seamless look. We will talk through cost, maintenance, drainage and appearance on your site visit.
Can you repair sunken or damaged block paving?
Yes. We can lift the affected area, correct the base, relay the blocks and re-sand the joints, and where the cause is poor drainage we will say so and recommend a fix.
Can you widen or extend my existing driveway?
Yes. We can extend or widen a drive and match the surface and edging to what is already there where possible, or blend in a new style.
