Patios and Pathways for Worcester Gardens, Big and Small
Many Worcester gardens are small, overlooked and used every day, so a patio has to earn its space. It is where the washing is hung, the children play and, on a good evening, where people actually sit. A path has to carry the bins and the shopping without turning slippery.

TDL builds patios and pathways in porcelain, natural stone and block paving. We are based in Worcester, so we know the mix of older terraces with long narrow plots and newer estates with compact, plain gardens, and we plan the layout around how you use the space.
Picking a material for a compact garden
Porcelain is hard-wearing and easy to wash down, which suits a shaded patio that never quite dries out. Natural stone brings colour variation and character that sits well against older brickwork. Block paving is practical for paths and for awkward shapes because it can be cut and curved around borders.
Think about the route as well as the surface. A path from a side gate to the back door is walked in all weather, often carrying something, so it needs a firm edge, a non-slip finish and enough width to pass a wheelie bin. A seating area, by contrast, wants space for a table and chairs to be pulled out without anyone ending up on the lawn.
- Porcelain: low porosity, simple to keep clean
- Natural stone: individual colour and texture, needs sealing in some cases
- Block paving: good for curves, steps and repairs
- Pathways: firm edges and a gentle fall so water does not pool
Foundations, falls and side access
A patio is only as good as what is underneath it. Because ground and drainage can vary from one street to the next in a city the River Severn runs through, we check levels and surface water first. Paving is then laid on a compacted sub-base with a fall away from the house, so water drains away from the walls and not towards them.
Older terraced and semi-detached houses often have a side gate and a rear boundary that dictate where a path can run. We plan deliveries and waste removal around those narrow routes. We also cover Powick, Rushwick, Norton and Claines, and a free site visit is the easiest way to settle the layout before anything is ordered.

Patios & Pathways in Worcester: common questions
How do you stop a Worcester patio holding water?
We set a gentle fall away from the house and build on a compacted sub-base, rather than laying slabs straight onto soil. Looking at surface water on site first tells us where the water needs to go.
Can a path run down the side of a terraced house?
Usually yes, provided there is room between the wall and the boundary. We work around the gate, drainpipes and any shared access, and tell you honestly if the width is too tight for the finish you want.
