Retaining Walls, Steps and Drainage in Worcester
Hardscaping is the structure of a garden: the walls that hold soil back, the steps that make a level change safe, the raised beds that make a plot useful and the drainage that keeps everything dry. In a city garden these jobs are often squeezed into very little room.

TDL builds retaining walls, raised beds, steps and drainage for homes in Worcester and the surrounding villages. We are based in the city, so we are used to compact plots where every wall has to earn its place.
Walls, beds and steps in tight spaces
Older terraced and semi-detached gardens often run long and narrow, with the house sitting higher than the lawn. A retaining wall or a short flight of steps can turn that awkward drop into usable space. In a newer estate garden, a raised bed or low wall can add shape to a plot that is otherwise plain and flat.
Because city plots are overlooked, the finish counts. Neat coursing, clean copings and steps that are the same height from top to bottom make a garden look considered even when it is only a few metres across.
- Retaining walls: block, brick or timber sleepers, built to hold soil safely
- Raised beds: easier planting and better definition
- Steps: consistent risers, grip and a sensible width
- Edging: crisp lines between lawn, paving and borders
Water is the real test
A wall that holds soil also holds water, which is why drainage comes first. The River Severn runs through Worcester, and ground and drainage can vary from one street to the next, so we look at levels and surface water before we quote. Behind a retaining wall we plan a way for water to escape, whether that is a drainage layer, a channel or a soakaway.
Access is tight on many terraced streets, so we plan deliveries, waste removal and working space before the first block is moved. If you are in Powick, Rushwick, Norton or Claines, the same careful preparation applies. A free site visit lets us check heights and falls with you.

Hardscaping in Worcester: common questions
Do I need drainage behind a retaining wall?
Almost always, because trapped water pushes against a wall and can make it fail. The right solution depends on the height of the wall and where the water can safely go, which we assess on site.
Can steps be added to a sloping terrace garden?
Yes, as long as there is room for even risers and a comfortable tread. We usually mark out the line on site first so you can see exactly how much of the garden the steps will take.
