Retaining Walls, Raised Beds and Steps in Inkberrow
Walls, steps and raised beds do quiet but important work in a garden. In Inkberrow, where compact plots sit near larger gardens and houses of different ages, these structures solve very different problems from one property to the next.

We build retaining walls, raised beds, steps and drainage, and we handle excavation, foundations and finishing in one go. Whether the garden is a narrow cottage strip or a family lawn with a slope, we plan the structure first and the finish second.
Structures suited to the age of the house
Beside an older cottage, a low wall in brick or stone gives a garden a settled feel. Raised beds built in the same material tie planting to the house, while sleepers suit a more relaxed, rustic look. Matching bricks and stone exactly is not always possible, so we choose complementary materials that look right together.
Around a newer home, rendered or clean-lined block walls and neat steps work well, especially where a family garden needs a clear route from the house to the lawn.
- Retaining walls for terraces and banks
- Raised beds at a comfortable working height
- Steps with consistent risers and firm landings
- Channel drains and soakaways
- Edging to separate paving, gravel and planting
- Low walls to define a seating area or lawn edge
Drainage and the reasons walls fail
Most failed garden walls fail because water was not planned for. We include drainage behind retaining walls and consider where surface water will go when we lay beds and steps. Water also finds its way to the lowest part of a garden, so channels and soakaways need to run to a sensible outlet within the property.
If you are not sure what your garden needs, ask for a free site visit. We will look at the levels, talk through the options and put the recommended work in writing.
Where a garden slopes, steps and a retaining wall together can turn an awkward bank into level, usable ground.

Hardscaping in Inkberrow: common questions
How high can a raised bed be?
That depends on what you want. Lower beds are cheaper to build and easy to sit on, while taller ones are easier on the back. Anything built to hold back soil needs proper footings and drainage. For a vegetable bed, a working depth of around the height of a standard sleeper is usually plenty.
Do garden steps need a handrail?
Not always, but a handrail is worth considering where there are several steps, a steep rise or elderly users. We can build steps with a gentle rise and deep treads to make them safer. Side rails can be fitted to existing steps too, if those are in good condition.
