Fencing and Gates in Martley: Timber and Composite
Boundaries in the countryside have a lot to do. Around Martley a fence may need to shelter a garden from wind, add privacy along a long side or mark the edge of a plot that runs a long way from the house.

We supply and fit timber and composite fencing, gates and repairs for homes in Martley, Bromyard, Hallow, Broadheath and Lower Broadheath. Post setting, panel fitting and gate hanging are all done by our own team. Repairs and gate fitting can be done at the same visit as a new run of panels.
Posts, panels and exposed ground
Rural plots are bigger and more exposed, so sturdy fence posts and secure gates matter. A long run of panels acts like a sail in strong wind, so posts need to be set deep and firm. Timber is a natural fit for country settings, while composite needs less upkeep over a long boundary where repainting would be a chore.
Height and style depend on what the fence is for. A tall solid panel gives privacy beside a patio, while a lower or more open style keeps the view across the countryside and still marks the line of the plot. Along long boundaries we often mix styles, using solid panels near the house and something lighter further out.
- Timber panels or close boarding for privacy
- Composite fencing where low upkeep is wanted
- Strong posts set for exposed positions
- Driveway and garden gates that close securely
Gates, repairs and boundary rules
Gates take the most punishment, so hinges, latches and posts need to be robust. Storm damage is common on open sites, and we repair leaning posts and broken panels as well as fitting new runs. Gravel boards at the base keep panels clear of damp soil, and capping rails give a neat top edge that also protects the end grain from rain.
Fence heights are generally limited to 2 m at the back and sides and 1 m beside a highway, but check with your local council, and talk to neighbours about who owns each boundary. We can look at the whole perimeter on the free site visit. Posts are the part that decides how long a fence lasts, so they are set carefully and kept clear of wet ground.

Fencing in Martley: common questions
What fencing suits an exposed Martley garden?
Sturdy posts matter most. Close boarded or solid panels with well set posts and gravel boards cope better than lightweight options, and we can advise on the layout once we see how the wind reaches the site.
Can you repair a storm damaged fence rather than replace it?
Often. If the panels are sound and only the posts have failed, we can replace posts and refit the panels, though old rotten timber is usually better renewed. We can also match existing fencing where you only need to extend a boundary.
