Retaining Walls, Raised Beds and Steps in Martley
Rolling countryside means gardens rarely sit flat. In and around Martley, plots near the River Teme and across the village can rise and fall, and the ground needs some structure if it is going to be usable for lawns, seating or growing.

Our hardscaping work covers retaining walls, raised beds, steps and drainage for homes in Martley, Bromyard, Hallow, Broadheath and Lower Broadheath. It is built to last on larger, more exposed plots, with the groundwork done properly before any visible walling goes up. Each job is planned so that the finished structure sits comfortably in the landscape rather than looking bolted on.
Holding back soil and shaping levels
A retaining wall does more than hold soil: it turns a steep bank into level ground for a lawn, a seating area or a vegetable plot. Taller walls need proper foundations and drainage behind them, and we plan these before building. Sleepers, brick and block each suit different settings, from a rustic border to a crisp modern terrace edge.
Raised beds are a popular addition to large village plots. Built from sleepers, brick or block, they put growing space at a comfortable height, keep soil contained and give structure to a plot that might otherwise feel shapeless. Position matters, so we consider sun, access to water and how you will carry tools and compost to them.
- Retaining walls to level banks and slopes
- Raised beds for growing at a comfortable height
- Steps with firm treads and sensible rises
- Drainage channels or soakaways for wet ground
Steps, drainage and exposed ground
Rural plots are bigger and more exposed, so structures must be sturdy and well drained. Water left behind a wall builds up pressure, so we include drainage as standard rather than as an afterthought. Steps are built on a solid base and finished with a grip that stays safe in wet weather. Where steps climb a bank to a gate or seating area, we also consider handrails and lighting positions, so they are practical on dark evenings as well as attractive by day.
Because large gardens can be tackled in phases, walls and steps can be built first and planting added later. We will talk through the sequence and look at the slope during the free site visit. Where the ground stays damp, a channel or soakaway can be added at the same time.

Hardscaping in Martley: common questions
Do retaining walls in Martley need drainage?
Almost always. Water trapped behind a wall adds pressure and can cause it to lean or crack, so we build in drainage and a suitable free-draining backfill behind the structure.
Can raised beds be built on a sloping lawn?
Yes, and they often work well there. We can step them across the slope so each bed sits level, which also helps with access, watering and keeping soil from washing downhill. The answer depends on the height and what the wall holds back, which we check at the visit.
