Patios and Garden Paths in Callow End: Stone and Porcelain
A patio in a large village garden has a different problem from one in a small town yard. There is plenty of space, but the sitting area is often some distance from the house, and the route to it needs to stay usable after rain.

In Callow End, where plots near the Severn can sit low, a patio that looks fine in July can hold standing water in January if the levels were not thought through. We build patios and pathways for Callow End, Powick, Kempsey, Hanley Castle and Worcester, working with porcelain, natural stone and block paving.
Material choices for a generous garden
Porcelain gives a clean, even surface that resists staining and moss, which is useful where a shaded corner of a big garden stays damp. Natural stone has more variation in colour and texture, and tends to suit older cottages and mature borders. Block paving is practical for paths and larger areas that need to take a barrow or a bin without fuss.
Edges and joints deserve a mention. A patio laid tight to a lawn needs a firm edge so the slabs do not creep, and jointing should be chosen to resist weeds and washing out. These small details are what separate a patio that stays crisp for years from one that needs attention after the first wet winter.
- Porcelain for a tidy, low-fuss dining terrace
- Natural stone for texture and a softer, weathered look
- Block paving for long paths and utility areas
- Stepping stones or a firm edge where a path crosses a lawn
Levels, falls and what lies underneath
A good patio is mostly hidden work. The ground is excavated, a compacted sub-base goes in, and the slab or block is laid to a gentle fall away from the house so water never sits against the wall.
Low-lying ground adds a question that has to be answered early: where does the water go? Sometimes a fall towards a border is enough, and sometimes a channel or soakaway is needed. We will say so plainly at the planning stage, and the free site visit is the moment to walk the garden and mark out where the patio and its paths should run.

Patios & Pathways in Callow End: common questions
How do you stop a patio flooding on damp ground?
By setting the finished level and falls correctly, building a properly compacted sub-base, and providing somewhere for the water to go. If the plot needs a channel or soakaway, we say so before laying begins.
Can one project include both a patio and a path to the far end of the garden?
Yes, and doing both at once usually means less disruption, since the digging and levels are planned together. The path can use the same material as the patio or a different one to suit the setting.
