Hardscaping in Hallow: Walls, Raised Beds, Steps and Drains

Larger gardens need structure, or they can feel like one big open space without a plan. Walls, raised beds, steps and drainage are the elements that create shape, add practical benefits and let the garden work in all weathers. A garden with none of them can look flat and drain badly.

In Hallow, beside the Severn, gardens are often large enough to carry several of these features at once. We build them across Worcestershire, with groundwork done carefully because hard landscaping has to stay put for decades. Cheap shortcuts in the base are exactly what show up later as cracks and leaning.

Structures that divide and support

Retaining walls hold back soil where the garden changes level, creating flat areas for patios and lawns. Raised beds give vegetable growers and gardeners a more comfortable working height, and they can form a boundary between zones.

Steps connect levels and are best designed to be wide and gentle in a big garden. Together, these features make a sizeable plot easy to move around, and they let you separate a play area, vegetable growing and a quiet seat without needing fences.

  • Retaining walls built with proper footings and drainage
  • Raised beds in brick, stone or sleepers
  • Wide, shallow steps between terraces
  • Drainage channels and soakaways
  • Edging between lawn, planting and paving

Clearing and levelling come first

Often the first step in a Hallow garden is clearing the site and levelling it, because walls and beds built on uneven ground rarely sit right. Once the ground is true, footings go in and construction can proceed. Drainage pipes and backfill go in as the work rises, rather than being squeezed in afterwards.

We can build everything ourselves from the groundwork up. Get in touch for a free site visit, and bring any ideas or sketches along; we also work in Claines and Broadheath, and can often combine nearby jobs.

Questions

Hardscaping in Hallow: common questions

Do raised beds need a base?

Not always, but they do need to drain freely. On soft ground a levelled strip or gravel layer helps keep the frame square and stops water from collecting at the bottom. Timber frames should be lined and raised slightly off the soil to last longer.

Why do garden walls lean?

Usually because of weak footings or water pressure building up behind the wall. A solid base, good backfill and an outlet for water prevent most problems. Taller walls need proper design, so we say so early.
