Rebuilding a lawn from rough ground

Rough, weedy or rutted ground cannot simply be turfed over. The old growth is removed, the surface is levelled, stones are raked out and the soil is brought to a fine tilth. Only then does turf go down, laid tightly in a brick pattern and rolled so the roots meet the soil. This groundwork is where most of the effort goes, and it is why the finished lawn is even.

Natural, artificial or a mix

A large rural garden rarely needs one answer. The main lawn works well as natural turf, while a small artificial patch near the back door, by a play area or under a washing line can take heavy use all year. Using both keeps the garden practical without losing the feel of real grass.

Aftercare is simple but important, and on a big lawn it is worth planning the watering method before the turf arrives. New turf wants regular watering for the first weeks, and a first cut once it has rooted. Established lawns benefit from feeding and moss control at suitable times, and from edges that are kept tidy. We can look at the ground on a free site visit, check drainage and talk through which parts of the garden should be grass and which would be better as something else.
