Hardscaping and Drainage in Upton-upon-Severn Gardens
In a garden near the Severn, hardscaping is mostly about water. Upton-upon-Severn can see river flooding in wet winters, so walls, steps and beds need to be built to shed it, not trap it.

We build retaining walls, raised beds, steps and drainage for homes in Upton-upon-Severn, Hanley Castle, Kempsey and Hanley Swan, and we deal with the drainage as part of the build rather than as an afterthought. Walls and steps are permanent, so getting the water route right at the start saves a rebuild.
Drainage solutions that suit low-lying plots
Several tools exist for moving water: channel drains across paved areas, land drains in a gravel trench, and soakaways where the ground can take them. Which one fits depends on where the water collects and where it can sensibly be sent, and sometimes two are used together.
We look at the plot before suggesting anything. Gardens near the river can be low-lying, so well-prepared sub-bases and permeable surfaces are a priority.
- Channel drains at thresholds and across patios
- Land drains in gravel-filled trenches
- Soakaways where the ground allows
- Permeable sub-bases beneath steps and walls
Raised beds, walls and steps that stay sound
Raised beds are useful where the ground is wet, because they lift roots above standing water. They need drainage holes or a gravel layer so they do not simply become tubs. Retaining walls need a free-draining backfill and outlets so water pressure does not build behind them.
Steps in a damp garden need grippy treads and a firm base that does not settle. We will be straightforward if a plot needs extra drainage work before any structure goes in. Raise any concerns about damp or standing water at the free site visit and we will plan around them.

Hardscaping in Upton-upon-Severn: common questions
What is a soakaway and will my garden suit one?
A soakaway is a buried chamber or gravel-filled pit that lets water drain slowly into the ground. Whether it works depends on how the ground behaves, so we check conditions rather than assume. In heavy or waterlogged ground a soakaway can fill and stop working, in which case a channel to a different outlet is the better answer.
Do raised beds help in a garden that holds water?
Often, because they put the roots above the wettest soil. The bed still needs drainage underneath so it does not trap water. Lining the sides and leaving a gap at the base keeps soil in and lets surplus water out.
