Hardscaping in Leigh Sinton: Walls, Raised Beds and Steps
Views of the hills are a lovely thing to have from a garden, but the land that comes with them is seldom flat. At Leigh Sinton, a village between Worcester and Malvern, we often meet gardens that fall away from the house or hold water in one corner. Good hardscaping is mostly about doing the unseen work properly.

Our hardscaping covers retaining walls, raised beds, steps and drainage, for homes in Leigh Sinton, Great Malvern, Malvern Link, Broadheath and Rushwick. It is the structural work that makes the rest of a garden usable.
Turning a slope into usable space
A sloping garden or a damp corner can be levelled and drained at the same time as walls and steps go in, so no part of the plot is wasted. A retaining wall can create a flat terrace, while a short flight of steps links the levels so you can move easily from patio to lawn.
Construction depends on the height. Low walls in block, brick or sleepers are straightforward, while taller ones need stronger foundations and drainage behind them. Raised beds are popular on village plots because they make growing easier and give a flat bed on uneven ground. Built from sleepers, brick or block, they hold soil neatly and can be sized to suit the garden and the person working it.
- Retaining walls for terraces and banks
- Steps with solid treads and even rises
- Raised beds that suit a cottage or modern garden
- Soakaways and channels for damp ground
Drainage and finishing details
Drainage is built in rather than bolted on. Water behind a wall, or pooling at the bottom of a slope, causes more damage than almost anything else, so we plan outlets from the start. Steps should have even rises and a surface with decent grip, particularly on a shaded or damp slope.
Where a village property has character, we aim to match materials and patterns so new walls and steps look as if they belong. Raised beds can be capped in a matching material for a tidy finish. Hardscaping in Leigh Sinton: common questions
Is a retaining wall needed on a gently sloping garden?
Not always. A gentle slope can sometimes be managed with grading or a single step, but anything that needs a flat seating area or holds soil against a structure usually needs a proper wall. We always allow for water, whatever the height of the wall.
How do you deal with a damp corner in the garden?
We find out where the water is coming from, then use levelling, channels or a soakaway to carry it away. The corner can then become useful space instead of a muddy patch.
