Driveway Installers in Great Malvern: Block Paving and Resin
A driveway on a hillside has to do more work than one on flat ground. In Great Malvern, many gardens sit on the slopes of the Malvern Hills, so the front of a house may rise or fall towards the road, and the surface you choose has to cope with that gradient every day.

We install block paving and resin driveways, and repair existing ones, across Great Malvern and nearby Malvern Link, Leigh Sinton, Hanley Swan and Upton-upon-Severn. On a sloping plot we plan ground levels and run-off before choosing a surface, because that decision shapes everything that follows.
Why the slope decides the surface
Water follows the fall of the ground. On a drive that tilts towards the house or the pavement, rain can pool at the bottom, wash sand out of block paving joints or find its way to a doorstep. Setting the falls correctly at the groundwork stage saves a great deal of rework compared with correcting them afterwards.
Block paving suits a gradient well because the interlocking blocks can follow gentle changes in level, and individual blocks can be lifted if a section settles. Neighbouring gardens in the same road can differ a lot in gradient, so we look at each plot on its own terms rather than assuming one build fits every house. Resin gives a smooth, joint-free finish, but it needs a sound, properly drained base and a surface that sheds water in one direction.
- Levels set out first, so water runs to a drain or border and not towards the house
- Channel drains at the foot of a steep run to catch fast-moving water
- A firm, well-compacted sub-base, since slopes put extra strain on edges
- Edge restraints and, where needed, a short retaining section or steps at the side
Repairs and what to check before you commit
Many sloping drives show their problems as sunken patches, loose blocks near the lowest point or cracked resin where water has undermined the base. A repair that only patches the surface will fail again unless the cause of the movement is dealt with.
Paving a large part of a front garden may need planning permission unless the surface is permeable or drains to a lawn or border within your property, so check with your local council. If you want a dropped kerb, that needs separate consent from the highway authority. We will talk through the practical side at a free site visit and quote, and explain what is realistic for your gradient.

Driveways in Great Malvern: common questions
Can a steep drive in Great Malvern be block paved?
Yes, in most cases. The blocks follow the gradient, but the sub-base and edging must be built to resist sliding, and drainage across or at the bottom of the slope needs planning at the start.
Is resin suitable if my drive slopes towards the road?
It can be, provided the base is sound and the falls are correct. Resin is poured as one surface, so water needs a clear route off it, usually through a drain or a permeable build.
